Head over Skis is the romantic comedy debut by Sophie Davies, set to be published in September. When Lottie books a ski trip with her friends, she doesn’t expect it to be the most life-changing holiday of her life. When her long-term boyfriend, Adam, cheats on her days before they hit the slopes, Lottie does something radical – a one-night stand with someone she will never see again. Suddenly, this one decision turns her life upside down, especially when that one-night stand is staring back at her as her new ski instructor! While Lottie grapples with her feelings for Adam, she cannot fight the attraction to Rory. Can Lottie work out the meaning of true love before the ski trip is over?
This book was so cute! I absolutely adored Rory and how caring he was towards Lottie. What was written well was how there were elements of lust that started with this impulsive one-night stand to their relationship, but it was quickly underpinned with such deep-rooted love and emotional vulnerability. I’m not usually a fan of first-person narrative, but I really enjoyed Lottie’s POV, which gave enough balance of her thoughts, feelings, and the overall story. Davies’s writing was easy to get lost in, with moments of humour and vulnerability. The pace didn’t slow at all, and honestly, I thought the book could have been longer because I wasn’t ready to leave Rory and Lottie! I would have liked a chapter from Rory’s POV because that would have added a little more depth to the tension, but it’s not necessary – I just wanted more of him.
The pacing had me hooked from the start, and I couldn’t put this book down! The description of the ski resort was vivid, and I really felt transported to the mountains and wished I had a ski holiday booked! I also liked how Lottie didn’t fall into the trap of being a pushover with her ex, Adam, and logically realised why they weren’t a good fit. There were a few plot twists that were a little predictable, but that doesn’t mean they were written poorly; I just had an inkling what some of the reveals would be.
Overall, Head over Skis is a really cute and light-hearted read that I devoured in days. I found myself rooting for Lottie and rediscovering not only her spark for creativity, but also realising her worth – something that was certainly not appreciated in her relationship with Adam. With electric tension, feet-kicking romance, and vivid description, I was transported into the story and didn’t want to leave! I’ll definitely be looking out for Davies future work!
