Måneskin owned my mind at their London show

London’s o2 is notoriously difficult to travel to and always has its problems, in my opinions, but as soon as Måneskin announced their European leg of their Loud Kids tour, I was convinced I needed tickets! I would defy all odds to get my hands on a ticket and travel on the Jubilee line to North Greenwich. Måneskin climbed the steps of fame for many years, with their success on Italian X-Factor, before their victorious win at the 2021 Eurovision song contest – which I am also a big fan of the show! Eurovision is an excellent platform to discover new music and artist as well as embracing different cultures and countries around the world through music. Music has its own language the defies boundaries. When the band won Eurovision in 2021, I would have never believed that two years later on the same week as the 2023 grand final, I would be seeing Måneskin sell out the o2 arena and would be there singing along! I’m so glad discovered their music and have been apart of history for the group’s skyrocketing career.

“…an incredible performance that showcases the band’s talent and command of the stage.”

Before the show I was already convinced that the atmosphere and energy would be amazing and electric from the videos of the tour and various live performances on Youtube. After the release of their latest studio album Rush!, I knew that the show was a must-see! As I counted down the days and relentlessly listened to the band’s back catalogue. May couldn’t come quick enough.

I was surprised that the band didn’t have a support act, which is customary for many acts to use on tour. I enjoyed this idea that Måneskin were the only talent in the building and the stage was solely theirs to own and command. Once I was seated and filled my hands and pocket with merchandise, I was ready to become immersed in the music and atmosphere. The event ticket stated the show would start at 20:00 hrs (8pm) and in true Rock ‘n’ Roll style, the band were fashionably late by twenty minutes. The lights went down and the air became energised. Then the red curtain covering the stage became alight with the band’s shadows, Damiano David’s, the frontman, vocals enchanted the arena. The energetic notes of Don’t wanna sleep from their latest album Rush! echoed throughout the arena and the mesmerising light show where the curtain drops and the chaos began.

Damiano was a force to be reckoned with as his stage presence oozed danger, vivacity and talent. I always knew the band were a unit that would sound amazing live, but in reality they exceeded all expectations and their harmony on stage was astounding. During the performance, Damiano and guitarist Thomas moved from the main stage to a small stage in the centre of the standing ticket area. They decided to used this stage for acoustic versions of Vent’anni and If not for you that slowed down the pace before more chaos and faced paced songs like La Fine and Mark Chapman took centre stage again. I enjoyed this slower acoustic tone and provided a chance for Damiano’s vocals to take a focus without heavy rock beats. While Thomas and Damiano raced back to the main stage, Victoria and Ethan entertained the crowd with their instrumental ensemble and kept that energy going. There wasn’t any part of the night where there wasn’t music or instrumentals playing that continued a rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere.

Final thoughts…

As expected Måneskin have broken through the glass ceiling of a Eurovision commodity and continue to impress with their music, stage presence and relentless boundary pushing that accumulates into their not caring what the music industry thinks of their style or music. I am very intrigue at what Måneskin will do next and what their music evolves into with their growing experience and success. They are a must-see live as the energy and atmosphere is indescribable. Stand-out songs from the night – but it is hard to choose – Own my mind, Feel, Coraline, Don’t wanna sleep, and Vent’anni. Of course, everything was exceptional and the band have outperformed their recorded studio sessions.
