When I started writing Cornelia Fairfield in 2023, I created the first draft of a map by throwing rice on the page and moving everything around to create the continent of Lucidossa. The fictional continent fragmented after a volcanic eruption a 100 years ago and thus, created separate islands that are very hostile to one another. Cornelia lives on the corrupt island of Silvertown where nobility dictates destiny. The island’s name actually came from the desire to honour my late Grandfather and his early life in the East End of London (the book is dedicated to his memory). I love fantasy books with maps and I know I’m not alone in that sentiment, that is why I was very keen to immerse readers in the world of Lucidossa from the moment they turn the page.
Without giving too much away, I’ve explained below some of the world building and what Cornelia faces on her voyage to Oblivion.
