‘STRUNG ALONG’ is Amy’s entry to the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2023.
This piece was not selected for the next round of in-person judging, but it is a privilege to have had the opportunity to submit a piece to such a prestigious cultural institution. The Summer Exhibition’s theme was ‘only connect’ and it conjures up many ideas of togetherness, separation and connections in our everyday lives.
‘STRUNG ALONG’ is made of torn-up magazine cuttings glued on a canvas with one single pieces of red wool connecting into one continuous loop.
The wool circles and flows around words and phrases such as, ‘people’, ‘dream’, ‘trolls and mobs’, ‘art’ and ‘following the crowd’ (see image for all the phrases). These words and phrases are all things that we as individuals and as a society are strung along by. These ideas connect and by a domino effect into another part of our lives that changes how we think and feel. This piece also has a deeper meaning, as a MA museums studies graduate who has found entering the sector difficult and still yet to find work, I used museum and cultural magazines as my resource – all the words and background text discuss and explore cultural institutions, for example art galleries. As a graduate who has jumped through all the hoops of education and work experience, I still cannot find employment within the sector and in turn this makes me feel strung along.
It was my first time entering a piece of artwork to the Summer Exhibition and it certainly won’t be my last attempt. The journey of creating my piece and feeling immersed in creativity and art with a theme to focus my thoughts was enjoyable. I encourage others to find their passion and become lost in art.
