Check-in to the whimsical Between Worlds B&B for magic, friendship and self-discovery.

The Between Worlds B&B by Amy Mae Baxter is a whimsical fantasy that follows Margo in her coming of age journey while discovering the magic of the B&B. When she is locked out of her house and missing her keys, she stumbles upon a B&B in the clearing with one room available for the price that is exactly in her bank account. As she wanders inside she meets Finn, the receptionist and baker who presents her with baffling magical Terms & Conditions and sets off to uncover what she must learn before departing the B&B with the help of a demon, a faerie and a ghost – oh, don’t forget the blue cat with fins!

This book has very cosy vibes and I love the whimsical magic of the B&B presenting itself to guests when they are in need of learning something about themselves. However, I wanted to learn more about the past guests and how the magic of the B&B worked. I loved the idea of the Wizard on the Porch which in my head I pictured like a Santa clause figure in a tropical shirt – not sure if that is what the author intended – but I enjoyed his quirky and fatherly figure.

This book will resonate with young teens with the coming of age storyline and I particularly liked the representation of Margo’s anxiety. I did feel the pacing was a little off with the plot having no real urgency for Margo to leave the B&B at times and this meant the plot lacked a little direction until the end. That being said, I really enjoyed the interesting cast of characters and how they all ended up helping each other find their purpose and learn something new. I would have loved to explore more of the B&B and its quirks like random rooms and the magical world outside the B&B such as when the guests visited the market. Overall a sweet story with whimsical vibes that will have readers wishing they could check in and explore this world.
